Average entropy of a subsystem.

چکیده

If a quantum system of Hilbert space dimension mn is in a random pure state, the average entropy of a subsystem of dimension m ≤ n is conjectured to be S m,n = mn k=n+1 1 k − m−1 2n and is shown to be ≃ ln m − m 2n for 1 ≪ m ≤ n. Thus there is less than one-half unit of information, on average, in the smaller subsystem of a total system in a random pure state.

Topological Entropy Bounds for Switched Linear Systems with Lie Structure

In this thesis, we provide an initial investigation into bounds for topological entropy of switched linear systems. Entropy measures, roughly, the information needed to describe the behavior of a system with finite precision on finite time horizons, in the limit. After working out entropy computations in detail for the scalar switched case, we review the linear time-invariant nonscalar case, an...

Entropy Budget for Hawking Evaporation

Blackbody radiation, emitted from a furnace and described by a Planck spectrum, contains (on average) an entropy of 3.9± 2.5 bits per photon. Since normal physical burning is a unitary process, this amount of entropy is compensated by the same amount of “hidden information” in correlations between the photons. The importance of this result lies in the posterior extension of this argument to the...

On the Thermodynamics of Classical Micro-Canonical Systems

We give two arguments why the thermodynamic entropy of non-extensive systems involves Rényi’s entropy function rather than that of Tsallis. The first argument is that the temperature of the configurational subsystem of a mono-atomic gas is equal to that of the kinetic subsystem. The second argument is that the instability of the pendulum, which occurs for energies close to the rotation threshol...

Topology in Free Fermion Systems

We study the relationship between bipartite entanglement, subsystem particle number and topology in a half-filled free fermion system. It is proposed that the spin-projected particle numbers can distinguish the quantum spin Hall state from other states, and can be used to establish a new topological index for the system. Furthermore, we apply the new topological invariant to disordered system a...

Subsystem Entropy Exceeding Bekenstein's Bound *

If Bekenstein's conjectured bound on the microcanonical entropy, S ≤ 2πER, is applied to a closed subsystem of maximal linear size R and excitation energy up through E, it can be violated by an arbitrarily large factor by a scalar field having a symmetric potential allowing domain walls, and by the electromagnetic field modes in a coaxial cable.
